Worth OC`ing i5-4670k?
According to the title, I updated my old computer for the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion.
Current setup: CPU is an I5-4670k not yet overclocked, motherboard was a g1.snyper z87 with bent pins on the CPU holder, RAM is g.Skill Ripjaws x 4x4GB totaling 16GB, SSD is Crucial Mx500, GPU is GTX 1070 Ti, power supply is Evega Supernova 650W gold, case is Fractal Design, monitor resolution is 1080p at 144Hz.
I’m wondering if overclocking the CPU would help and whether it would noticeably improve my gaming performance compared to stock settings. If not, do you have any suggestions for a suitable motherboard without overclocking? If yes, I’d really benefit from it and would appreciate recommendations for affordable options. Thank you in advance.
Bent pins can still be found. It would be a loss if we didn't try. Regarding your query, did you experience performance problems with the game that led you to overclock? Some CPU-heavy titles gain significant advantage from CPU overclocking, while others are less affected by the game's engine or data distribution across cores and threads. Games that aren't CPU-intensive might not see any improvement at all. If recovering the motherboard isn't possible and you need a straightforward way to run your i5 without overclocking, consider H61-based boards. However, it's a shame to have a K chip with that chipset. Used Z77 or Z68 models are currently available at good prices on sale platforms.

Some CPU-heavy titles gain significant benefits from CPU overclocking, while others are less affected by it, depending on the game's engine and data handling per core/thread. Can an OC be possible with a used Z77 or Z68, or would a suitable board be necessary for my chip?
Thank you for your message—I may attempt to recover the board but will need a magnifier and some extra light.
For overclocking, a Z chipset is recommended. A solid motherboard is essential for a Z motherboard. They offer improved voltage regulator modules and enhanced power delivery.
Good luck with the recovery process. Be patient—don’t pull them out, just align them properly and rotate the socket to check all angles.
Apologies for the confusion; the intended components were a Z87 motherboard and an H81 chipset, not the third generation CPU. The logic remains unchanged.
Sorry meant Z87 motherboard and H81 chipset respectively, confused the CPU as 3rd gen. Logic stays unchanged.
Alright if I want to overclock Z87 without a H81 chipset? Thanks.
I wish I could locate a Z87 that isn’t too restrictive.
Some affordable H81, H87 and B85 chipsets might let limited overclocking, though results aren’t certain. Poor VRM in those boards can cause issues except your chip is very efficient and can overclock without higher voltage. If you’re considering this route, go with Asus.
