Pc is shutting down during folding at home. Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @ 3.4 GHz RAM: 16 GB from 32 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3200 CL16 Patriot Black Out Viper GPU: Asus Noctua RTX 3070 OC Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi Boot Drive: Samsung SSD 980 Pro 2 TB Secondary Drive: Samsung SSD 970 PSU: Thermaltake 80 Plus Platinum Toughpower PF1 850W CPU Cooler: Noctua D15 Case: Corsair 220T RGB (removed) Fan: 1 Noctua fan (exhausting) Assistance is needed. I’m facing two issues: one with RAM and another with power supply. The first issue occurred when I installed 32 GB of RAM (two different Patriot Viper Blackout kits, same speed and timings). My PC would crash with a blue screen saying "Critical Process Died." The error appeared briefly, so I captured a photo. Only Folding@Home and Topaz AI Video Upscaler triggered the crash, but not simultaneously. I performed stress and stability tests without success. The second issue started after removing half my RAM (16 GB). The blue screen disappeared, but PSU shutdowns still happened—especially during power testing with OCCT. Folding@Home and OCCT caused shutdowns; Topaz AI worked fine with 16 GB. I changed RAM profiles and settings, but results were inconsistent. I noticed the blue screen view doesn’t show crash logs. Folding at home takes roughly 10–15 minutes before crashing, while OCCT took about an hour. I’ve tried adding RAM sticks in both channels; power on/off helped when the side panel was off. The PSU makes a clicking sound. It’s now flipped to draw in case air and I blew some compressed air into it. I’m testing now.
On Windows, launch Event Viewer via Control Panel and check for clues. The memory test tools didn’t show any issues. From what you shared, it seems the problem might be with the power supply unit.
After the flipped PSU drawing, the air-cooled computer had been running for about 1.5 hours. The best time I've seen was just under an hour. It's surprising how much pressure the case put on the PSU. I placed it on my desk without any padding underneath. The PSU filter was present, but it didn't seem to help much.
The only clue in the event viewer is the system warning about improper shutdown and a flipped PSU drawing, noting air cooling was active for over an hour. The best previous case lasted just under an hour. It seems the PSU might have been heavily loaded. I placed it on my desk without any components underneath. The PSU filter was removed. Hmm
There appears to be an issue with Folding@Home and Ryzen processors that some users have faced for more than a year. It seems the application can cause unexpected shutdowns on these systems, especially when multiple CCXs are involved. Although the 5800X model is mentioned, it’s unusual for it to behave this way. The repeated crashes, requiring PSU resets, raise concerns beyond just the F@H bug.
Six days after the incident, I returned and Windows started without a clean shutdown (event 41), but the event viewer didn’t display any critical logs or blue screen information.
Turn the power supply back on after a crash? That’s your GPU. I’ve faced the same issue with a Seasonic PSU and my 3070Ti. I’ve never managed to run WHEA on any of my Zen 3 components, even my 5900X.
