WMI provider consumes significant processing power
Hi. This problem has been really frustrating recently. The WMI provider host is constantly using around 20% CPU. When that happens, restarting takes about five minutes and it freezes completely. After checking online, I think the Dell software is responsible for the excessive CPU consumption. How can I resolve this? I own a Dell G5 but prefer not to upgrade since it’s solid hardware, though the software is problematic. The Alienware command center tends to delay startup during these issues, and my fans aren’t responding properly. When playing games like Fortnite (1080p with high settings) or Raft (maximum settings), the CPU stays at 100%. My GPU only reaches 130 watts out of its 160W TDP, and it seems the system is stuck due to a forced update that took about 20 minutes. Task Manager won’t open, performance is sluggish, and I can’t even power off the machine. This is really annoying. Any advice would be appreciated. Edited September 9, 2022 by DreamCat04
I'm just wrapping up here. It seems the problem was likely with Alienware Control Center. This software tends to crash and wipe the system clean. Every crash drained CPU power from the WMI Provider host, making it impossible to restart or use Ctrl+Alt+Del. After selling it a few months later, I didn’t do a full reinstall, but the fix came when someone else bought it—hopefully without those issues. The sale was about six months ago, so no further questions needed.
