I came across information about the enormous dimensions of certain cards and a new 12 pin connector. I was planning to buy a gaming rig over Labor Day. The concern is whether any micro ATX i purchase will be compatible with the 3000 series cards, particularly the 3080, and what kind of motherboard would offer good forward compatibility.

We're comfortable with a triple slot card, and that situation. The main worry is length, though I think you probably won't have much of a problem there either. Width might be the next trend, but until we actually see cards, we can't be sure about it.

Do you want to know the actual size they demonstrated? I understand 3090 is quite large, but could 3080 pose a problem in a micro ATX setup?

Until partner cards arrive, it's hard to predict. I'm not sure there would be any problems with the 3080, unless they include very large heatsink designs.
