power and reset aren't essential; their main role is to close the circuit. For the HDD LED, you should connect it with the correct polarity—look for the positive side indicated by a triangle indentation on the connector's back.

Yes, it means the polarity doesn't affect the function of those buttons. It's generally safe to use them without concern for orientation.

Absolutely, it only occurs occasionally. As long as you don’t connect it to a power source, there’s no risk of damage.

Triangle indentation appears on the connected wires too!

It operates without any polarity, simply connecting the two pins together. The same principle applies when powering on the PC by touching a screwdriver to the board's pins. The device you're connecting performs the same function.

Who would think of connecting a front panel wire straight to a power source?

I wanted to watch it melt. I connected the 12v line from a dead optical drive to 120v, which created some smoke, a loud noise, and then a tripped circuit breaker, leaving me without power. Of course, I also experimented with 5v and grounding, but that made even more smoke!

Insert it in, you can reverse it, no issue. The LED should face the correct polarity, though the switches aren't aligned.

Follow the same pattern as before, and you'll be great. All labels should point in the same direction.
