Windows XP runs slowly after a fresh setup.
I chose to bring back my old laptop because it was sluggish on Windows 7 and Vista. I went with Windows XP, downloading the ISO a few months prior from Microsoft. I recorded it onto a CD to avoid using a DVD and to save space. The setup process was much slower than installing on a modern system—Windows would boot up in about an hour. Even after reinstalling, it took the same amount of time. I’m wondering if there’s a way to make it faster. It has a dual-core processor, 2.5 GB RAM, and built-in graphics. Drivers are already installed.

Go to the control panel, check the device manager for any needing drivers, or simply use Ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

All drivers are ready. Ubuntu isn't functioning well on this laptop—it causes the screen to distort and become unreadable. The 32-bit version works fine with a 32-bit CPU.
I believe you're relying on a standard driver instead of the specific ones. For instance, VGA might benefit from a custom VESA implementation from the GPU manufacturer to enhance performance. Similarly, the chipset and other components should use their unique IDs like HARDWARE to select the appropriate drivers.
I downloaded the drivers from a website and installed them, not the ones Windows came with. I used the chipset driver, the audio driver, the LAN driver, the Wi-Fi driver, the Bluetooth driver, and the display driver.
