Windows XP login problems and the Miami hotline displaying an out-of-memory message
About six months back I received two free units—a Dell OptiPlex 755 and a Dell Inspiron. Now we’re discussing the OptiPlex. I attempted to run Windows XP on it, which required a CD installation and succeeded. It has network capabilities and everything seems fine, but it lacks a dedicated GPU; it only has an integrated graphics card. I installed an older version of Steam, but the login isn’t working—probably because of patches. I’m curious if anyone else fixed this issue or uploaded a fix to GitHub.
The bigger issue is Hotline Miami not functioning on it. I posted about it on Reddit and made a link so you don’t have to repeat the explanation.
P.S. My goal with Steam is to play some games I’ve been wanting, and I miss Windows XP. I’m considering a GTX 750 Ti, but I need a GPU that fits my budget.
The game no longer supports Windows XP, which is why it isn't functioning properly.
The issue lies here—I used a 2012 version, which meant it wasn’t available for purchase then
the only dgpu i own is my main rx 5700 xt, but it doesn’t fit in the case. the pc feels odd since the gpu needs to be upside down? that’s strange, isn’t it? as i mentioned, i’m holding back spending money yet—i’ve already zipped a single fan onto a fishtank psu, and i’m only getting about 60$ a month for fans.
Your display graphics might not be utilizing enough RAM to function properly. It's been quite a busy period since I worked with XP on a 755, but can you raise that memory allowance in the Intel graphics settings? These systems use the BTX standard. While it didn't gain much traction with aftermarket parts, OEMs adopted it for a short time. Avoid investing heavily in outdated hardware—even a GT 1030 would be unnecessary. A $10 Radeon HD 8490 would represent a significant improvement over the built-in Intel graphics. Keep in mind that XP runs on a 32-bit OS, so your GPU's VRAM will consume part of your 4 GB memory space. Adding a 1 GB video card would leave only 3 GB free for applications.
in the bios i noticed the vram setting too, i set it to max (512mb) but it didn’t work. i used a website to get the missing windows updates, and i have the newest updates for windows xp. i found an used radeon gpu in my city, though i’m not familiar with old pc hardware. maybe you can assist me? 50 lei is roughly 10 euros https://www.olx.ro/d/oferta/placa-video-...derIndex=2
