Hello everyone! I’m asking if there’s a secure method to link an old Windows XP machine on a LAN to newer, safer systems running Windows 10 or later. Since XP is no longer supported and poses security risks online, I’m concerned about connecting it safely while still being able to share files with modern devices. I have an industrial PC running XP with no chance for upgrades or OS changes. My choices are either keep it offline, use USB transfers (which would be cumbersome), or limit LAN access. I have about £150 to spend on hardware or software and would appreciate any suggestions—perhaps a dedicated firewall between the machine and the main network could help. I’m hoping this works out!

The system isn't responding to updates because it lacks proper connectivity settings. Using a local IP without a gateway prevents external access while still isolating it from the internet. This setup remains vulnerable regardless of firewall configuration.

The system operates in an industrial environment using specialized equipment that isn't available for standard upgrades. The components are outdated and can't support a current operating system. I'll assess what options exist by assigning it a dedicated local IP address.

That's the optimal approach. Even limited access to your LAN brings significant security concerns, such as smb1, which can also make copying files over the network more difficult.
