Hello, I recently acquired an old ThinkPad Z61M. It lacked RAM and hard drives, but after installing them, I managed to set up Windows 10. However, performance was poor, so I wanted to run some older games, which led me to install Windows XP. The issue is that it doesn’t detect any storage devices or media. I’ve tried several fixes: rebooting, updating BIOS, using another ISO, switching to IDE or compatibility mode (though the latter doesn’t work), changing drives, adding more RAM, and applying all service packs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For a 2006 model, it might function more effectively with Vista.

The installation process encounters issues even with Vista, and version 7 is the earliest it supports.

The drives in version 7 are being detected. If you're using Windows XP, it indicates the system is operating at its most basic level.

I'm attempting to set up XP, but Vista didn't work. Windows 7 seems to be the most recent Windows I can use.

It seems your system is set to XP, but the drives aren't showing up. The process might take a while if the oldest drive is present. Try using version 7, or check if the drives are visible in the current settings.

7 handles drives and installs smoothly. Apologies if my updates seem a bit unclear.

XP doesn't offer AHCI storage by default; you typically have to adjust settings in the BIOS to enable legacy IDE compatibility. This option is rare on laptops, as observed. It seems possible to install AHCI drivers through the XP installation ISO, though I haven't tried it myself. Likely you'd need a different operating system to identify the controller and locate compatible drivers if required.
