I have an old Windows XP computer that I'm attempting to back up and store all my files from, since it's finally time to get rid of it. I try to move the file to a Windows 8.1 machine, but I'm unsure what type of file it is because it's a .dat file and I don't know how to handle it.

The backup tool you used is likely the same one needed to decompress the files. If you accidentally backed up everything, you’ll need to start over with a smaller backup. Regarding copying folders, it’s possible restrictions apply—such as folder limits or system policies. Are there specific reasons preventing direct copying, and how many items are involved?

Are you referring the .dat file as your Windows XP backup? I’m not sure what format Windows XP backups use, but if that’s the case, you’ll likely need a recovery tool to restore Windows. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to revert to XP directly. The safest approach is to move all necessary files from XP to another drive and then transfer them to a system running Windows 8, or use a data migration service. Good luck!

Use agent ransack to locate all files, then gather them into a single folder. This is the method I use for backing up client PCs.
