This feature helps me postpone updating my build until issues are resolved. I’m currently using version 1607. Also, the WU option only triggers updates without downloading or installing them automatically.
Typical problems include drivers not being updated prior to beginning the upgrade. Reports indicate certain drivers introduce bugs that hinder the upgrade. Always verify all drivers are current before starting. Although Windows Update attempts to provide the newest patches, not every manufacturer submits their updates to Microsoft. Security programs may mistakenly detect threats and block operations, leading to installation errors or stalls. It’s advisable to remove your security software beforehand and reinstall it afterward, or simply ensure you’re using the most recent versions available—this often resolves known issues. Be aware that registry cleaners, such as CCleaner, can sometimes cause disruptions even if the system seems stable. Issues usually emerge during upgrades because many files are accessed at once. A corrupted registry entry may go undetected and trigger further problems. Using a registry cleaner is generally unnecessary and offers no performance gain. Unless you have a particular need—like removing a problematic uninstaller—it’s best to skip it. A registry functions like a database; changes don’t inherently slow performance. Additionally, viruses can compromise your system. An antivirus removes infections but cannot restore altered files or registry modifications. Upgrading may therefore cause instability. What alternatives exist? You can use a USB drive or disk with Microsoft Media Creation Tool to obtain the latest Windows 10 version. Boot from it and perform the upgrade independently of Windows. This method carries no certainty of success, but it may be preferable to a full reinstall if you have significant data or complex configurations to preserve.
