Can you get into Windows at all? If yes then run winver and check the exact build string, you can post it here or paste it into Google. If not then the best thing would be to use WinRE to restore back to a point before the update failed. To get into WinRE simply boot your PC then as soon as you see the spinning dots circle either reset or power off, repeat this process a second time and on the third boot attempt WinRE will run automatically.

I also opened Winver and saw it shows Version 20h2 (Build 19042.1165).

The solution involves using Microsoft Media Creation Tool for the upgrade or utilizing the official update page at https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software.../windows10. Ideally, review the logs to identify the problem. Unfortunately, this specific Windows update error isn't listed on the Microsoft site (or I couldn't locate it). It appears to be a generic failure message.

A Windows 10 upgrade typically refreshes the operating system like moving from one version to another—installing the new OS and transferring data seamlessly. This process usually resolves underlying issues. Finding detailed guidance is challenging due to the abundance of misleading "helper" websites that repeat the same information, often unrelated to actual problems. Forum discussions tend to recycle similar answers, and many users give up, opting for a full reinstall.

When you share more details, I can help you navigate the logs effectively.

If you're interested in deeper logging, you can access Windows update logs through these paths:
- C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsUpdate
- C:\ProgramData\USOShared\Logs
- C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

For .etl files, convert them into readable log files using PowerShell commands (see the provided link). This can simplify troubleshooting.

I executed the Windows update tool, which required some time but produced the same error code unfortunately.
