Windows Server VPN/RRAS issues with domain credential handling for file sharing after January 2022 updates
Hi, I'm the system administrator for a school. After the January 2022 VPN and fix updates, users with up-to-date Windows 10 can connect to the VPN/RRAS server but still can't access network resources. The UseRasCredentials setting remains active, which rules out that issue. I've recreated the connection and reconfigured the server settings. I also set up a new server using a fresh installation of Server 2022 to test. A machine that hasn't been updated recently this evening allowed me to map drives without problems, then applied the updates and lost that capability afterward. From what I understand, credentials are typically entered into the credential manager for file sharing and SQL tasks, but without it, local users lack network permissions, resulting in a "password incorrect" error. I haven't found much of this online except a suggestion from a Microsoft Tech Community forum thread about January 2022 quality updates breaking domain credential issues. They recommended a workaround, but it doesn't fit my situation since their passwords change often and require manual handling. Any suggestions on why this might be happening or how to investigate further would be appreciated. Thanks, Paul.
You've encountered issues with the Jan 2022 cumulative update affecting other VPN-related features. Removing the update temporarily resolved the problem, but subsequent patches in Jan and Feb 2022 made the issue permanent. Online discussions are sparse on this topic. Manually entering credentials into the credential manager isn't practical for us, and some services like SQL Server Manager don't require them. A solution is clearly needed. I found a suggestion about installing rasmans.dll from before Jan 2022, but haven't tried it myself. I'm hoping to implement it soon and would appreciate hearing your experience or any alternative approaches you've discovered. It seems many of us are facing the same challenge.
