Whenever I turn on my laptop and attempt any tasks, the antivirus software or malware removal tools consume significant memory and storage space, regardless of what I do. Anyone have a lasting fix? I'm in the middle of a quick search but need about 20 minutes for my browser to open.

Increase your RAM purchase. Ensure you get a compatible matching kit for your laptop.

Are your specs up to date? Unless your laptop is outdated, has just 1 gig of RAM, or uses a mechanical hard drive, you shouldn’t be affected by Defender running.

I own 12 gigabytes of RAM, it suits me well, I rarely use it fully. The issue is it consumes around 500 MB and strains my CPU and disk.

My old laptop runs fine without the "Microsoft Antivirus" and works well after upgrading to an SSD and adding more RAM.

You’ve accomplished it, I’ve been using Arch on my older machine before, I’ll never go back to Windows again!

Having 500 MB of RAM in a 12 GB system is typical for Windows security.

It's typical to use around 5gb with three Chrome tabs running. I'm not sure about the current standards, but it seems manageable for my old machine.

I see your concern. But simply expressing frustration doesn't help. There are alternatives available without Windows. You're not being pressured to use it. If you share detailed specifications, experts might offer better guidance. Are you using a solid-state drive or is your storage still relying on traditional HDDs? Perhaps I didn't catch the details, but what version of Windows are you running? Has this issue always existed or is it a newer problem? 12 GB is adequate for basic browsing, though. I think it's likely not dual-channel. If it is, the performance suffers because of uneven data distribution (like 8Gb and 4GB sticks). RAM usage isn't a reliable indicator of an OS's quality. More RAM means more resources Windows consumes, since RAM is faster than storage devices. It's better to maximize RAM usage rather than relying on the SSD. Using unused memory doesn't yield any financial return. Five gigabytes is not a lot.
