I'm working with a 256GB SSD from my Steam Deck inside a Sabrent M.2 caddy. It was set up on the Steam Deck using exFAT and everything functioned properly. Recently, when connecting it to my PC, I encountered a "0x800701E3 Fatal Hardware Error" and couldn't copy any files. I suspected the bent connector in the USB-C cable and tried a different one. Windows reported errors and asked if I wanted to fix them; I agreed. After retrying, copying failed and the Explorer crashed repeatedly, forcing a reset which created two versions of Explorer. Now the drive displays "Disk 5 Unknown Not initialised" in Disk Management. I’m not concerned about the files themselves—just the drive—and would like it back. Additionally, running wmic showed an OK status, but I’m unsure what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's sad that few provide helpful solutions for such common problems like this drive issue. I face the same challenges, as I only needed an external drive for portable use—installing games or backing up media. I'm unsure if it's related to how Steam backs up or installs on external drives, or just a pattern of failing drives. Running chkdsk didn't help, diskpart failed, and the disk manager crashed. The dead drive seems rare, but some people seem to have bad luck with fake products and online purchases. I'm hoping this will raise awareness and get clearer answers from others.

After the initialization failure, can you right-click the drive in Disk Management and choose to initialize it? If possible, formatting it to FAT32 should restore normal functionality. Please let me know if this doesn’t resolve the issue so I can assist further.
