The previous update was a data move, not a full reinstall. I simply transferred the drive from my old computer to the new one without replacing it.

Microsoft maintains its own records of Windows serial numbers and hardware identifiers. If your device—especially the motherboard’s serial code—was previously connected to a Windows 10 setup (which likely occurred during the free upgrade window), the subsequent installation will start automatically once the PC links to Microsoft servers.

Based on the specific mainboard parts, the system now uses a unique identifier for each component. This approach links the motherboard model to a code that activates the device. Switching the mainboard changes the ID, requiring a new activation.

its a good thing, you can reinstall the OS as many times as you wish and still reactivate on the same mainboard. Helpful for Microsoft as it reduces the amount of license requests they get when people reinstall and reach their maximum key activation from back in the days of Vista, Win7 and Win8/8.1.
