The Verge reports that Microsoft is incorporating Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, and Fedora into the Windows marketplace. These applications will operate through virtual machines and are expected to offer complete functionality similar to a traditional OS installation.

Windows Subsystem for Linux is available now and has been tested. It's still in development but works well. Unlike a virtual machine such as VirtualBox, you can directly work with files on the Windows platform it uses.

I understand there are always alternatives available, this seems the simplest version they've offered recently. Likely intended for learners aiming to run Linux on Windows 10 S.

It refers to the same feature as what you mentioned, but it was only available on Ubuntu 14.04. You can turn it on in Programs & Features after the Anniversary Edition release. It's mainly for developers who work with Windows and need to build software for Linux servers, including Azure environments.
