He bought himself a MacBook Pro and wanted to run some light games on it. I’m new to this, but I’m curious about installing Windows on a Mac. He doesn’t want to remove OS X, just want the ability to use both operating systems together.

You must use Boot Camp to set up Windows on it while keeping the Mac OS running.

Bootcamp is the best option. I recommend setting up a new OS X to minimize the HDD usage. Get ready for your MacBook using Bootcamp—download the necessary drivers and install via disk or USB. In my case, only the disk method was effective, consuming around 15GB of space.

If he wishes to maintain OSX, a bootcamp could be an option.

Choose either bootcamp that sets up Windows on a fresh partition or switch between them at startup. Alternatively, opt for tools such as Parallels to let OSX and Windows operate together, enabling seamless transitions with a single swipe.

Turn on the spotlight, enter 'boot' in the search bar, tap on Boot Camp Assistant, read the on-screen steps, let the Boot Camp installer download an ISO for Windows 7. After that, mount it to a USB drive or install it immediately. It’s best to choose more storage space for the Windows partition, as it comes with only enough for the OS and limited programs by default.

bootcamp, though, I'm curious—do his games run smoothly on a Mac? I've noticed decent performance on MacBooks using OS X.

Bootcamp offers a practical solution. Comparing it to VMware Fusion helps create virtual machines, but performance for Windows tasks will be significantly lower. Remember, MacBook Pros, particularly the Retina models, need a cooling pad or strong airflow if you plan gaming sessions—otherwise they can overheat quickly and slow down.

You might have already found your solution, but I'm here to help and say BootCamp ☺
