I encountered a driver issue where I added Windows 8 drivers to Windows 10 and the keyboard stopped functioning. Because of protection from other deletions, I had to reinstall Windows since the driver file was locked. Now I managed to remove them from the Windows.old folder without protection. To reinstall the earlier version of Windows, I went to recovery, advanced setup, restarted and selected System Restore. The system asked for a restore point, but it didn’t find one. If you have a SATA-to-USB cable, you could back up the entire Windows.old folder and replace the drive, wiping it clean before restoring everything.

You go to recovery and Go Back to previous version, not advanced. That's how you get back to what's in Windows.old, but the option may not appear if the folder was tampered with. That won't work at all, there's a ton of under the hood stuff going on for an actual restore.

You're asking about the difference between a protected and an untampered folder. It seems you're unsure why certain files appear unchanged even after compression, and you want to understand what a tampered folder is.

There is likely a check that all files that are expected to be in the windows.old folder are there and unmodified, with the right permissions etc, if it fails then it doesn't let you restore because it wouldn't know how broken the backup is. Got messed with.

You can check your disk for issues by scanning it for errors.

In Advanced Boot settings you can revert the update. Access it by pressing restart and shift together.

I already have all the files, just need to reinstall the programs, not too much trouble.
