Windows no longer provides updates for Floppy Drives.
Hello, I keep seeing this on twitter so I am not entirely sure if it is true or not, but according to some people in the latest update or the next update of windows 10 they are ending support for floppy drives. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I know people in the company I work for still use a USB floppy drive since they do not want to use flash drives. Thanks
Twitter is mistaken. I'm running Windows 10 version 2004 Build 20170 - Insider Preview from the Dev Channel. This is the newest release of Windows 10 available to everyone. My computer (~11 years old) supports a native floppy or diskette drive with the old FDD connector or cable. Turning it on in BIOS lets Windows 10 File Explorer show the floppy as expected. I have a 1.44MB diskette, drive, and FDD cable ready to test. Unfortunately, I can't locate the 4-pin molex to floppy power adapter cable, so I can't power it up. But when I double-click drive A, Windows initiates the read process. It seems the issue might be with the floppy itself, especially since we're dealing with older technology. I'm not sure if it will still function after all these years gathering dust.
To determine the impact of disabling floppy disk support, it's important to analyze its effects on security, performance, and storage. Removing this feature could enhance security by reducing potential vulnerabilities associated with outdated hardware, improve speed through optimized system operations, and free up storage space. Microsoft might include it as an optional feature and disable it by default to streamline the user experience.
