Windows isn't closing correctly? Check for issues or updates.
Hey everyone, I usually keep my PC running around the clock—24/7, 365 days. For about the past couple of years, I've been using Windows 10. When I press start and try to shut it down, it seems to close normally. After rebooting, the AMD graphics software pops up with a warning like "Settings return to default, system wasn't shutdown properly." Around three weeks ago, I switched to Windows 11 from a USB install, but the same problem persists. I checked the Even viewer, but I’m not sure what I’m looking for. It displays one critical error and says Event 41 Kernel-power system. Any suggestions on why it might not shut down correctly? My BIOS is up to date (1.2.0.7 or similar), I’ve installed the latest AMD drivers, and I regularly apply Windows updates since I leave the PC on all the time. There’s also another issue in the sidebar. On my MSI B550 gaming plus, the second M.2 slot sometimes fails to appear after a full shutdown. I restart it a few times and the drive shows up normally again. But today it’s completely unrecognized. I’ve restarted it 3 or 4 times already. HwInfo64 says all three drives are listed, but only two are showing up. In BIOS, it lists my 860 Evo Sata drive and the 970 Evo+ in slot 1. I haven’t tried reseating the M.2 slot with the SN550 yet, but I’ll do that later to see if the drive comes loose. I’m not sure if it’s a loose drive or something else, but I’m open to checking. The HwInfo report shows the remaining life was 100%, except for the 860 drive at 94%—that was from 2018. The other two drives are a year old and were fine when I first installed Win11. Appreciate any help!
The same problem occurred with a corsair drive, but a BIOS update resolved it. It didn't happen again afterward.
I'm really struggling right now. I tried restarting and reinserting the M.2 drive, but it still isn't working. This time, my Adrenaline software didn't reset and no new critical errors appeared in the Event Viewer. PCing can be unpredictable. I still need to figure out what's happening with this drive. As I mentioned earlier, everything seems up to date. *sigh* Hopefully this issue is resolved!
Consider testing the 970 in the second M.2 slot to verify recognition. If issues persist, replace the WD drive or proceed with warranty claims. The problem likely lies with the motherboard rather than the BIOS version, which is AMD AGESA. You may need to recheck later. If the issue remains isolated on the board, manual BIOS reflashing without software could be an option. We'll handle that further.
I'm planning my next steps once I'm back home. I'll try different slots to check the results, though I suspect the second M.2 slot might not work. The BIOS version is 7C56v1A; I added the Agesa part because it was the latest update for the AMD TPM stutter fix. I'm using only software—MSI M-Flash via a USB stick—not downloading from the internet or using MSI Center. Thanks for the feedback and assistance. I'll switch the slots in a few hours and share an update afterward.
I changed the slots and both disks are now visible. It's strange because I replaced the WD drive earlier this morning and it wasn't listed. I'm keeping it that way for now, but during this restart my main issue returned—Radeon settings reverting since the system thinks the shutdown wasn't done correctly. Life moves quickly, lol.
I believe there might be an issue with the drive. Please install WD's software and perform a SMART test. Otherwise, it seems your motherboard is okay.
Sure, everything is up to date and working well. I completed all the latest updates even before switching to Windows 11. Probably just a strange feeling. I’ll note your first comment as the resolution. Thanks for the assistance. And regarding the fake shutdowns, it’s fine—everything operates normally. Lol.
