You're considering switching from Windows 7 to a newer OS for your upcoming system. The main choices involve either downgrading Windows 7 or upgrading to Windows 10. Right now, you're weighing the pros and cons of each path. It seems hardware and software compatibility will be key factors, especially since you're thinking about a clean install if possible. The timing suggestion of waiting until July 29 is practical, as it gives you time to decide without rushing. Regarding cost, purchasing Windows 8.1 now might be more economical than buying a new version later, assuming the price drops after release.

Windows 7 is compatible with Windows 10, but not directly. You may need to use a compatibility layer like Windows Subsystem for Linux or virtualization.

It does, though the real point is whether I should maintain this device for any Windows-based operation, except that Windows 7 might create problems with the newer setup.

No problem, just a bit longer startup and Windows 8.1 offers a minor performance boost, but your main aim is moving to 10—either way it should work fine

You can try the Windows 10 preview, it performs well.
