Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Tools, then Folder Options. Adjust settings and click the checkbox for "Hide hidden folders." Your desktop file list should now appear.

This lets you customize the appearance, such as changing the icon in folders like Documents to reflect a different name. Moving that "desktop.ini" file can alter the displayed folder name, even if the actual file name changes.
