I received a hard drive from a friend that had Windows 7 installed. I need the product key to get it working, then switch to Windows 10. But every time I try to boot into Windows 7, I see BSOD and the PC won’t start properly. Safe mode options don’t help, and even system restore isn’t working. The recovery tools aren’t showing anything useful, so I’m stuck. When I run an arc scan from the command prompt, it tells me a repair is pending and needs a reboot. I can’t install Windows 7 media creation until I get the key.

is it running on the same motherboard where the OS first came in? otherwise it’s loading drivers for a board it doesn’t have. It’s interesting how many people overlook the original drive-swapping methods back then, right? everyone used to get through it easily a few years ago.

Connect it to the motherboard where the OS searches. It could be the genuine unit or a duplicate. If not, the OS will fetch chipset drivers and various system device drivers for components that aren't present.

If you don’t have the board, you can still proceed by using alternative methods or tools.

New equipment must offer an alternative solution.
