I’m trying to grasp how Windows and the system connect and recognize each other. Yesterday happened when my friend had no drive on his computer, so I gave him one of my old hard drives. We moved it to my machine, installed Windows 7, and when the desktop loaded for the first time we unplugged it. I took it to his place, connected it there, and after installing Windows, the BIOS asked me to choose between Windows 7 and another version. Even though I’d removed the drive, Windows still insisted on picking one. I’m confused about why the system couldn’t boot Windows on his PC and whether installing Windows affects the BIOS. I also wondered if installing Windows transfers any data to the BIOS. It surprised me that my system remembered having two drives with Windows installed, even though only one was connected. Now I have to always select between the two when starting up. How can I resolve this issue?

The master boot record got replaced and it wasn't sure which installation to use. It's possible he created an additional partition and set up Windows there.

tried it, but it doesn’t work. I can’t even access Windows 7 Master Boot Record on the disk I unplugged. I ran all the recommended steps on my OS drive, yet two Windows 7 installations still appear at startup. What’s the Master Boot Record and where is it located? Why does my system show two boot entries even though only one drive is connected? Is some data saved in the BIOS? How can I remove it?

MBR starts at the start of the divided storage device. It guides the system on how to begin. EasyBCD can help resolve issues with the two Windows installations during launch.
