Windows adjusts its color tones automatically
I’m not sure if "tones" captures it accurately, but let me explain...
Two days ago I purchased a new monitor, the ViewSonic XG2401. I noticed that when there’s a darker app running in the background—like Discord—the colors seem to shift slightly. For instance, when opening a folder or a light element appears, the background tones change, sometimes getting lighter or darker depending on what’s in focus.
I’m certain it’s not just the monitor itself, as I can see the differences clearly in Photoshop using the ColorPicker. My friend also checked and confirmed there are noticeable color variations when another app is active.
On my desktop, I’ve tested two images. When a window covers the screen, the wallpaper on my wallpaper appears lighter than when it’s just a plain background. I’m trying to figure out what could be causing this effect. I’m using an Nvidia GPU and haven’t experienced this before with my older monitor. It also happens inside Firefox, where bookmarks buttons look darker compared to a standard page, and they seem slightly lighter when switching to a dark page.
The display isn't working properly. Nothing showed up on the Nvidia screen either.
The two screenshots appear identical. It seems the display settings in OSD are unchanged, and dynamic contrast/brightness adjustments aren't being applied.
Based on your details, it appears you're dealing with a graphics card. The dynamic contrast ratio setting is active. Turning it off should resolve the issue. If you're using a laptop and Intel integrated graphics, ensure you have Intel's "Dynamic Display Power Saving Technology" enabled—specifically Dynamic Contrast Ratio. This feature has been non-functional for years, and Intel shows no interest in restoring it. Currently, its performance matches the default setting.
That was a reasonable assumption. The issue lies in identifying its position within the Nvidia control interface. I'm currently using a desktop system and haven't located the feature yet. I previously tried but couldn't find any relevant options, suspecting it might relate to dynamic contrast settings or similar controls.
Ensure your monitor is linked to the Nvidia graphics card, not Intel integrated graphics. Activate Full Color via the Nvidia Control Panel, adjusting resolution and dynamic range settings. Restore default options in each section if needed. Verify that color settings are set to "Full" rather than "Limited." If issues persist, remove any installed software affecting colors.
