From 9x up to XP doesn't work with a USB drive (though I remember some people managed 2K and XP with a bit of tweaking). Still, no matter what you think, 9x is outdated for this kind of hardware (and 2000 is too old), and even if XP would install, you'd likely have to find a disk or figure out USB booting and drivers.

Yes, you can use a DVD without issues if it's in good condition and compatible with your device.
