You might need to purchase a hard drive for it. Based on its age, it seems you're likely dealing with a 2.5" IDE (PATA) drive using that laptop's specific ATa connector with around 44 pins—something that would be extremely rare these days. You could probably find an adapter that changes the PATA to MMC or SATA, and even pull out the PCB from an SSD to fit the space, like this example: https://www.dx.com/p/2-5-44-pin-female-i...FceH2mxVhE

Based on its present state, what value do you estimate it holds? And what would it be like if you repaired it?

I wouldn't pay a penny for it. It's completely pointless. Throw it away at a Goodwill and claim a tax deduction.

Imagine Windows 98 launched in 1998, and today it's 2019—a machine that’s about 21 years old. Most folks don’t keep such old computers around, so you’d likely only find a few for around five dollars.

It’s essentially a Pentium MMX running at 266Mhz, equipped with 32Mb of RAM and a 2Gb hard drive. For reference, the first Samsung Galaxy S boasted a CPU four times more powerful, 16 times the RAM, and fourfold the storage. This laptop is not a good investment; you’d likely pay more for electricity than the device’s actual value. Unless it’s in pristine condition—complete with manuals—you might find enthusiasts or museums willing to offer $10 for it.

You could likely obtain around 50€ for it on eBay. A few weeks ago someone sold it for 86.63€ ($99). This community isn’t ideal for discussing vintage computers; consider looking at retro PC forums such as vogons.org.
