i've been looking into setting up a fast windows 98 pc. what are your thoughts on the idea? is there a form here for 98? maybe i'm overcomplicating things and should just buy a w/e and be okay with it? i own a 6800 ultra but after watching computer phill and some youtube tutorials, i feel lost. high-end components are really pricey. should i search for a pcie mb that supports 98 drivers, or look for an mb with 98 support instead? i already have a list, but i'm not sure what to do next. i'm not the most skilled at installing drivers, and i know 98 is all about the drivers. there are some old games that only run on 98, which would be great to play, but it's hard to find or get working outside of 98 os. plus, i enjoy building pcs but hate driver installation. should i: use my agp 6800 ultra and try to find an agp mb with 98 support, or go ahead and build a pcie and look for other options like net, sound card pci, mid-tier gpu with 98 support, and maybe even a core 2 duo? it's frustrating because windows 98 only supports single-core systems. edited february 1, 2021 by thrasher_565

This refers to a discussion about the limitations of the final version of a product. The author points out that despite finishing development, the release still contained significant issues like unresponsive systems and hardware failures, making it not truly perfect.

You can obtain the top-tier Pentium 4 with AGP compatibility and push it to its limits.

Windows 98 is limited to one CPU core, but Windows NT (certain versions) and XP support it. Many old games that ran on 98 can be adapted for XP, and numerous titles originally for 98 also work on Windows 7 or 10. Adjustments are often needed—sometimes patching works, other times a virtual machine is required, and DOSBOX remains useful for very old titles.

It’s going to be 98se, another choice available but it’s a challenge. Everything needs to function properly, and I’m frustrated because getting documents support for file transfer is really tough. The driver is an XP version, only used for Diablo 2 now, and I mostly play single-player, so I can open multiple windows. Why does Windows 7 64-bit install only on one PC? Using the same installer is frustrating. Sometimes PCs just don’t cooperate.

I’d choose option a. A ~3.2GHz P4 would suffice alongside your 6800 Ultra. Make sure the board supports it well, and I’d likely stick to 256-384MB of RAM rather than pushing higher.

I have 512MB available for use. I haven’t played any games, and running them wouldn’t be enjoyable on a 3D Rage II with DVD.
