They're expected to reduce the cost and offer a free upgrade for new Windows 8.1 users, similar to what was done with Vista to 7. I don't recall the exact details or timing, but it seems to be a common strategy.

Windows 8 retains a classic control panel and metro interface, which isn't too bad. (But beware the apps that demand excessive RAM)

I really enjoy Windows 8 here and feel a bit left behind, but I appreciate the fresh look of the new version. Live tiles are a nice touch too! Most folks update occasionally, so it feels quite normal.
