Need a start menu app for Windows 8.1? It’s freezing after six minutes of use. Classic shell is causing the issue.

I rely on Start8. The price is $5, but it offers great value. It resembles the Windows 7 interface while allowing much greater customization. More info available at the provided link.

I suggest relying on the Start Screen. It works well, particularly after the enhancements in W8.1 Update 1. Save all your frequently used items, choose a desktop background that appears in the Start Screen, keep your desktop tidy for quick access to temporary files, and enjoy the improvements.
