Hey everyone, here’s what I’m thinking... If I own a brand new laptop with an activated Windows 8.1 OEM, and I somehow managed to get the serial number without any official paperwork, I need to figure out the next steps. First, should I install Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 based on the serial? Second, will the activation process recognize this OEM serial? Third, does reformatting the original hard drive and running Windows 7 Enterprise actually release the serial for use elsewhere? A few details matter: the laptop came with Windows 8.1 as a standard, I moved it to another system six months ago, and I downloaded Windows 8.1 after getting the serial from the previous setup. I also bought a new PC recently and want to run Windows 8.1 there. My questions are: 1) Which version should I install? 2) Will the activation work given the OEM nature of the serial? 3) Does wiping the original drive and reinstalling Windows 8 unlock the serial for another machine? It’s not illegal, but it’s tricky—especially since the license was intended for the original device. The reason I’m asking is that I received an upgrade offer for Windows 8 two years ago for a discounted price, and now I upgraded to 8.1. I lost the serial number after purchasing Windows 8, and I don’t recall any emails with it. Plus, the upgrade promo was specifically for Windows 8, not 8.1, so even if it worked, I’d have to go through a complicated process with my SSD. Let me know what you think!

I believe the 8.1 OEM key is compatible only with that specific motherboard. I might be mistaken, but it’s wise to double-check. Someone else likely has more detailed information.

It seems you're right about OEM keys not working in that situation. You might want to look up your bought upgrade license key using Belarc Advisor, even though you're on Windows 8.1 and the original purchase was for Windows 8. It's a bit confusing!

I've found my 8.1 key through BelarcAdvisor. I'm unsure if it matches the one provided with my Win8 upgrade offer. However, when I input it on the verification site (http://d-fault.nl/PidCheck.aspx), it shows a "win 8.1 retail" result, suggesting a valid license. After some investigation, I learned that this key can be reused after formatting it for my current system. Some recommendations suggest it's limited to activating Windows twice. Someone who followed the exact steps—buying the Win8 upgrade, upgrading to 8.1, building a new PC, deleting the old OS and reinstalling with the same key—would have this experience.

I've handled that before successfully, you just need to get the Windows 8 ISO and then the 8.1 update (the system won't allow the update with a Windows 8 key). More details are available at the provided link.

Thank you for the clarification. It seems the key you currently have is a Windows 8.1 key, not the original Windows 8 key you received during the upgrade. You can verify this by visiting the key verifier site and entering your key there. If it displays "Windows 8.1," then you're using the correct version.

This confirms I have a Windows 8.1 key because the outcome shows "Win 8.1 pro Retail." Just download a Windows 8.1 ISO from here and you're good to go!
