I recall hearing about Microsoft stating they wouldn’t support Kaby Lake and Ryzen processors on older Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 systems. Is that still accurate? I’m assembling a PC for a friend and using the G4560, so I need to confirm if I have to buy a Windows 10 license or if an 8.1 key works. Thanks ahead!

They won't back Windows 7 or 8.1. You should definitely be able to run Windows 10 using your 8.1 key.

They put in a lot of work to encourage everyone to switch to Windows 10... Do you believe they’ll let you keep your current OS while still using the newest hardware?

From a technical standpoint, Ryzen supports chipsets for version 7. It's not perfect, but it works.

Kaby isn't officially backed for Windows 7 and 8.1, but it functions well on those systems. The screenshot from Pohernori's post indicates AMD added Windows 8.1 compatibility to their Ryzen driver set.

I just peeked at the discussion, thought it was cool, and ended up binge-watching Netflix. Of course I didn’t think 8.1 would work even though it’s an older system.
