Windows 8.1 lacks essential device drivers.
I assisted someone in setting up a computer and needed a Windows 8.1 installation. I received one from a friend on a USB drive. The setup appeared to work, but most of the essential drivers were missing, which might lead to problems later. I searched everywhere for those basic drivers but found nothing. Despite that, I’m confident the community here is knowledgeable and trustworthy when it comes to troubleshooting.
Get drivers from the motherboard's official site. http://us.msi.com/support/mb/A88XI_AC.html#down-bios
I suspect I might have chosen the incorrect term. It seems everything in the Windows 8.1 start menu is missing except the apps screen and a few features (the search function didn’t work either). What caught my notice was that the built-in wireless part on the motherboard wasn’t functioning even with the right drivers, which led me to wonder if some basic drivers were faulty—though connecting it straight to a modem restored internet access.
You downloaded the drivers from the motherboard site and have your Windows updates current.
I think Windows is current (probably all the updates were included when I first installed it), but I haven’t managed to install the motherboard drivers yet. It’s really late, my friends are asleep, and I don’t want to disturb them without their permission. Still, I plan to download the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s site and test them once I have a chance.
You're asking about installing something your friend provided and whether it comes from a different system.
It's a USB stick my friend lent me to use as a boot drive. I'm not sure how he got it, but he said it would work and it functioned except for some problems I'm experiencing now.
I disabled/restarted the computer several times during setup (mainly because of program installation and driver issues) and it never indicated which changes were expected or completed. It seemed logical that it should have updated, but it never showed progress. I recall visiting the Microsoft website and manually downloading updates, only to see a message saying the update was already installed.
