I've been attempting to download the Windows 8.1 update for roughly five hours, and so far it begins indicating 'getting devices ready' at around 50% progress before restarting the download... This is quite frustrating and I'm puzzled about why this occurs. My current internet provider is AT&T, though I plan to switch to Comcast next week.

Stop the Windows update procedure. Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Clear all files in the download folder. Restart and then restart the update. This should resolve the issue.
