Windows 8.1 HDD struggles to resume after sleep or hibernation.
When I power on my Dell Insperon 13 7000, the hard drive tends to stay quiet until I start loading something. This is normal, but once it does spin up, it gets quite loud and can take more than 15 minutes—often around four minutes—to load basic files like Chrome or my photos. The pictures sometimes crash repeatedly instead of loading smoothly. Is this issue related to Windows 8.1 or the hard drive itself? The laptop is a month old and has experienced this behavior since purchase, though it occasionally fails to start up properly. Specifics: Intel Core i7 5550U, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD.
I owned a Dell laptop a few years ago. After three weeks it would shut down right after turning on, they never identified the issue—it was definitely a hardware problem. The best solution was to bring it back to the store you bought it from and request a replacement or a refund, since it was brand new.
It seems you're looking for ways to manage storage issues. Check the task manager for high HDD activity and consider trying alternative antivirus options.
I reviewed the task manager and saw it lists the Service Host as Local System. When the disk wakes, it quickly increases the hard drive to full capacity, then drops back down from 98% to 50% for roughly 30 seconds before gradually returning. My sister mentioned a similar issue with her Asus laptop, so I’m assuming it’s Windows. I intend to purchase an SSD soon to avoid voiding its warranty.
Avoid relying on the warranty at this stage. Some users have reported positive results with certain fixes. I’d suggest trying a few if you haven’t had success. Good luck! http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...eada572ebe
Initiated a system scan to detect irreparable damage using SFC command. Noted a new tool was introduced for addressing the issue. Performed DISM cleanup and restored health on the image. Ran SFC scan again with no corrupt files detected. Uncertain if this resolved the problem, will follow up tomorrow.
It appears this has addressed several issues, which is encouraging. I’m confident this should also help with yours. If not, we’ll need additional solutions.
This didn't resolve the issue; disk usage remains high at 99% and doesn't decrease. I'll attempt option two upon returning home. Edit* The alternative choice also failed, but my laptop is now virus-free. Repairing the corrupt file appears to have boosted performance after the disk usage stabilized.
I reviewed more information and some users disabled features during setup. They claim it functions but isn’t the optimal choice (I’d consider this last or skip it altogether for now). Another recommendation is performing a hard drive inspection to check for physical damage. Some suggest One Drive might be the issue. You may want to test disconnecting your Microsoft account temporarily to observe any changes.
