I've attempted to run chkdsk but it didn't succeed, and the sfc /scannow command also indicates some files couldn't be fixed.

Download the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft at the provided link. If you have a blank DVD-R or DVD-RW and an optical drive, burn the disc yourself; otherwise, use a tool like Rufus. Pick your USB flash drive, choose the ISO file, and start the installation. Be aware that all data on the USB stick will be erased. After setup, try recovery if needed, and if it fails, reinstall Windows.

Choose the most secure option, then perform a complete fix. It may take as much time as a fresh setup, but it ensures your valuable data stays safe. Frequent updates are needed, yet preferable to beginning anew. When the SFC scan fails, it signals a serious issue.

The system reports issues with repairing certain files without displaying any errors from sfc /scannow.

The same issue occurred with my Vista installation. Trying to run CHKDSK /f /r should verify the drive for damaged files.

It indicates the current usage volume and allows you to perform the check again after your system reboots.

Yeah, I did, and it actually did something this time. I tried it yesterday and nothing happened, just booted up like normal. Anyway, it did it's thing but I'm still getting crashes so I'm going to reinstall Windows and all my files and programs will have to suck it up. If you know, can you give me a quick step by step on how to do the .iso business?

Download the ISO using the link you provided. Once the download completes, use a USB stick to back up your data before it gets erased during the transfer to the USB drive. After that, install Rufus and follow the instructions: choose your USB stick, select the ISO image, start the process, and it should finish successfully. Boot from the USB, and Windows installation will proceed normally. Enter your product key, activate Windows, and your USB will format automatically. Edited April 11, 2017 by Gaurav S Rao
