Hi,
No clear distinction exists between a paid W8.1 and a cracked version in terms of functionality.
Switching from W7 to W8.1 is generally recommended for better performance, not just for cost reasons.

1. Not so much. The improvement isn't significant. It seems to be just a placebo effect.
Stay on W7.

Purchase the key right away—it costs $30. Avoid being a pirate.
2. It's mainly for support, possibly a slight speed increase. You probably won’t see much change, around an extra 5 frames per second, but it does enhance overall performance.

If you locate a solid .iso file, there shouldn't be any distinction, though a few may include malware or additional software running quietly. 2. Be prepared for a slight delay of a few seconds during startup on the 8.1 version; I didn’t really feel an improvement.

I obtained my licenses from school through Dreamspark Premium/MSDNAA (free if your institution is registered) and the Windows 8 lunch deal (40$ for Pro edition + Media Center pack). It’s hard to refuse such a good offer—especially since Windows 7 had a comparable promotion at launch. Keep an eye out for the Windows 9 promotion.

I bought 130€ for Win 8 Pro. I need to create a tailored ISO with 8.1 update. It's really frustrating having to upgrade to 8.1 each time I set up my PC.
