I don't see a feasible approach. You'll need to tackle the unnecessary use of space.

He’s already facing a really unpleasant operating system, which makes me think it won’t be too much of an issue. Laughing it off isn’t helping, though—I’m shocked they considered this suitable for portrait devices. A simple search showed nothing substantial, even from the community.

I'm among the rare users who prefers the start screen over the start menu. Still a mistake from Microsoft though.
