Hey everyone! I'm assembling my PC and considering getting a genuine Windows copy. I'm wondering if purchasing a Windows 8.1 Pro (regular or OEM) will still grant me the free upgrade to Windows 10. I'm not planning on using Windows 10 just yet because some features don't work well, and it seems like DX12 isn't really useful until new games come out. My goal is for people who have already done this rather than just guessing. Thanks in advance!

You have until mid-2016 to upgrade from version 8.1 to 10. That should work.

You can obtain the upgrade by purchasing the retail version. The upgrade won’t be available if you choose the OEM version.

The main distinctions lie in quality, support, and customization rather than just cost.

The OEM version is tied to your motherboard. You can modify everything except this part. To switch platforms, you may need to contact Microsoft to get a new product key or they might require purchasing a different one.

You don't need to install Windows 10. You can choose whether to use it or not.

Retail adds just a slight cost compared to OEM, making it worth purchasing and repurposing.

I understand you're focused on sticking with version 8.1 until DX12 titles become available.
