I possess a genuine Windows 8.1 Pro installation. After being away for a week, the system functioned normally until I returned. Several applications became unresponsive. The following day, everything felt sluggish and required closing programs to proceed. Occasionally, the whole machine would freeze completely. Once I accessed the update page, it confirmed Windows was up to date immediately after I began using it again. Could this be linked to the recent update? I've maintained the machine consistently for nearly a year, cleaning dust regularly with compressed air. About a month ago, I swapped in a 1TB Caviar Blue hard drive and installed Windows. Given my hardware setup—CM Elite 110 MBOO, Pentium G3258 CPU (up to 60°C), CM Seidon cooler, Hyper X 1x8GB RAM, Sapphire R9 GPU, 1TB Caviar Blue SSD, and an Evga 600B PSU—I’d expect issues to stem from software rather than components. If this isn’t the root cause, I’d appreciate any alternative advice you might have."

Have you attempted switching it off and turning it back on?
2. Have you tried starting in safe mode?
3. Have you run any antivirus scans?

I've attempted a reboot but it didn't help. I couldn't even launch my antivirus programs (AVG & Malwarebytes). I haven't tried starting in safe mode yet. I've already begun restoring data to an earlier state, but if that fails, I'll try safe mode. Appreciate the advice!

It seems like a malware or virus might have affected your system. Running in safe mode could help you use your antivirus tools.
