Windows 7 updates seem unnecessary for your setup. You're facing persistent issues with your new HDD, and despite troubleshooting, it's not working. The Seagate drive is already in place, and you're considering keeping it instead of switching to Toshiba. Your main concern is performance—disabling the updates helps prevent the system from using excessive RAM (66-70%) during installation attempts. If you need advice, just let me know!

It's unusual you're facing setup problems with a fresh system. Did you reach out to Microsoft? They included it by default in Windows 10, which is quite handy. Regarding your current focus, I don’t really pay attention to updates unless they’re frequent or disruptive.

Are you certain they’re functioning properly? If this is your first version of Windows 7, it might simply take an unusually extended period. With numerous updates released since its release, the application can seem unresponsive for extended times while searching, and you should anticipate a lengthy download and setup process.

Hmm so you're getting the update loop glitch hmm try deleting the updates it downloaded so it can try a fresh install of those updates Assuming it's not one of these updates if it is block them KB3075249, KB3080149 and KB3068708 (which replaces KB3022345)

Absolutely, I understood. I was expecting a longer wait time—at least 50 minutes—before turning it off. Before, I had the same brand and capacity HDD, but it just wore out quickly, which is why I replaced it. With the new one, updates happen in just 1-2 minutes, and it never starts updating properly. That’s why I’m unsure what to delete.

I didn't notice that. It's not Windows 10; it's Windows 7 with 64-bit Ultimate Edition.

Believe it or not, it's possible that that is not enough. I know when I recently did a new install it took many hours for all of them to complete installation. How exactly did it get worn out? I've never heard of any kind of physical degradation other than drives simply failing when their life span is up. And for that matter: I highly doubt any issue you are experiencing is the result of an incompatibility between your HDD and the updates. But to finally answer the original question, yes they are worth it. They are necessary to patch security holes and fix bugs. If they are not installing properly and using all your RAM, that is a separate issue we should try to solve. (don't just give up on installing updates)

Sorry for the delayed reply, I ended up sleeping. I understand what you're referring to about waiting a long time for the installation to finish. The situation used to be different—before it would take about 2-3 minutes to check for updates, and then it would switch to "installing updates," which would last several hours. I plan to leave the PC running for a few hours while I'm away at work. If the installation takes longer than expected, I'll consider replacing the HDD or applying the necessary updates.
