Yes, it remains useful and works well. Many people continue to use it because they favor it over Windows 10. It stays effective until January 14, 2020, after which security patches stop being applied. By then, it's no longer advisable to rely on it.

I choose Windows 10 mainly because I enjoy Cortana and the new capabilities offered by the operating system.

It wouldn't be that way because there are still many users who prefer the most popular Windows version after XP. The main constraints come from newer CPU architectures like Ryzen and Kaby Lake.

It has never worked well as an operating system. Still, you might attempt to use it. Windows 10 is completely nonfunctional.
