I updated my PC a few weeks ago and tried to shut it down after use (kept it on for 24 hours on Wednesdays to defrag the HDD). Windows 7 kept freezing at the shutdown screen with the HDD activity light blinking brightly. Now it’s off but still shows “shutting down.” Someone, can you help? I forced it to power off after waiting five minutes and restarted it. When I logged back in, the screen turned green briefly, then everything loaded extremely slowly—about three minutes, then it worked but very sluggish.

It appears the Windows files are broken up. I suggest saving your information and reinstalling the operating system.

Checking for high fragmentation could improve performance, but only if you notice slowdowns.

Have you explored the system file checker? It could indicate a corrupted file. Learn more at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthe...cannow.htm

The recent error check with HD Tune showed no bad areas, so a system restore might be a viable option.

It might be possible, but always confirm backing up to another drive first.

After performing a restore, I'll make sure to save all data.
