Windows 7 or 8.1?
Windows 7 or 8.1?
It seems you're ready to restart it. I noted your comment on the discussion. I suggest choosing version 8.1—it offers quicker startup even on solid drives and is more recent, likely receiving extended support beyond version 7.
I’m comfortable with both operating systems since I’ve used Windows 7 and 8.1. I’m excited about the upcoming start button for Windows 8.1, but I really prefer the Aero interface over Metro. Since I haven’t played many old games anymore—just started PC gaming a year ago—I don’t see compatibility as a concern. I understand some people might want a newer look, but I’m not interested in that style. Maybe I just want to stay connected to the past?
What aspects of W8.1 do you dislike? The Metro feature and the absence of a start menu are the main issues. I expected strong dislike, but I’ve adapted and now prefer it more.
During installation, the product key appears invalid and blocks further progress regardless of attempts. I planned to get an SSD tomorrow because even with Windows 8.1 it felt sluggish for opening programs. Support isn’t a major issue for me compared to others. By the time 7 support ends, I hope Microsoft improves the version. Right now, I’m leaning toward Windows 7. I also noticed my Razer Deathstalker keyboard has more input lag than on Windows 7. The Metro design is disappointing, but I can tolerate not having a start menu (though that might change soon)

You can contact Microsoft and they’ll assist with reactivating your key. It makes no sense to invest in an older OS when you already possess a key for the newest version. Just allocate some time setting up Windows 8.1, and it should work fine. Activate Classic Start, configure Metro applications to launch in Desktop, and turn on booting to Desktop. You’ll end up looking and feeling quite similar to Windows 7.
