I was thinking about my 1000$ gaming setup and wanted to know which operating system to choose. I prefer Windows 8 but also like Windows 7. Right now, Windows 7 seems more affordable, but I’m concerned about what happens if a new OS arrives soon. Will there be new games and software only for the newer versions, making Windows 7 outdated soon?

Yes, it works. Instead of the usual setup, try Windows 8 and install the Classic Shell program from www.classicshell.net. It will run a version similar to Windows 7.5. Proceed with that and enjoy!

I run Windows 8.1 Pro with Start Is Back and have experienced no problems. It runs quickly and uses fewer system resources compared to Windows 7. You might also find it more affordable than version 7, though prices can differ.

I’d choose the 4th Gen i5 over the 1st Gen i5. Win8 is solid and doesn’t require much adjustment, while Win7 is mainly for nostalgia now. Picking a newer OS for a fresh build feels more logical.

It seems the shift from Win7 to 8.1 isn't as significant as it might appear, with 2nd gen versus 4th gen changes being more subtle than between 1st and 4th gen. Using StartIsBack works well for me. Classic Shell is still a solid option.

I was analyzing more options based on age, but the performance gap between them remains very small at most. EDIT: Performance in Windows 7 or 8?

It's unclear why you're asking this if it's just Windows 7. You could simply install Windows 7 without needing any additional software.

It seems the design feels more integrated with Windows, while the traditional shell clearly stands out as a third-party option.

The transition from the first to the fourth generation of Intel Core chips is much bigger than the shift from Windows 7 to 8.1. The move to Sandy was more impactful compared to Ivy and Haswell.
