I'm the IT specialist for my office (just interning at a research center with only four biologists). A laptop was brought from a coworker's home and functioned normally before. Once connected to the office network via CIA Ethernet, it became extremely slow—about five minutes to load a 5MB file on our NAS. After that, it stopped responding to any network connections. I've tried connecting through my phone, using a Wi-Fi adapter, switching cables, and even bringing it home without success. When I run the troubleshooter, it reports that Windows couldn't detect the proxy settings on the network. The device manager lists adapters but doesn't show "Change adapter settings" in Network & Sharing Center, and clicking it just says a connection issue. In short: My Windows 7 machine worked fine at home but wouldn't connect to any network there. No adapters appear in Device Manager, and help would be really helpful! Thanks, tech enthusiast!

Check if any devices appear in the Device Manager, especially those marked with an exclamation mark next to them. This could point to a driver problem.

Skip using the driver via Device Manager. Visit the manufacturer's website and re-download the file. Fail? Try another cable. Possibly a USB RJ45 Adapter or a PCI Internal Ethernet Port works better. The original port may have failed during transmission, causing issues.

I attempted to perform a system restore and mid-restore, but it didn't work. Once it failed, I connected it and everything functioned properly with the Ethernet connection. Windows is really impressive... Thanks for your help! Have a great day!
