Hello, I understand you're seeking assistance regarding compatibility of Windows 7 with Kaby Lake. It's important to clarify that this isn't a discussion about the platform itself but rather troubleshooting steps. You mentioned successful setup with MSI tools and a Windows 7 USB drive, which is encouraging. The crash in Safe Mode pointing to disk.sys suggests checking disk health or reinstalling drivers. Consider updating your BIOS, ensuring your graphics card supports the system, and verifying hardware compatibility. Let me know if you need further guidance!

Is the system set to Leagey/CSM configuration and is it starting from an HDD or SSD?

Hello, the system is configured for Legacy with Windows 7 available. The BIOS supports this mode, and during installation it works smoothly. When using an M2 NVMe drive, it detects everything correctly and completes the setup. However, the initial boot from the SSD encounters issues.

Windows 7 lacks built-in compatibility with NVMe storage. Drives work during installation but may fail to start properly afterward.

Attempted to install the Samsung NVMe driver, and now the system is running. However, USB3.0 features are still unavailable. Fascinating!

Hey there! It sounds like you're having trouble getting this 7-year-old OS to start up on your old laptop with the NEC USB3 adapter. That’s a bit tricky, especially since it seems like it might not be designed for NVMe support.

Collected every Win7 driver for that motherboard from MSI’s website, saved them onto a standard SSD. Function worked properly—every driver installed and Windows 7 operates smoothly now!

It's about finding drivers since Windows doesn't support them natively. This applies to other problems involving hardware or features that don't function properly.

Here’s a step-by-step guide tailored for your setup. Make sure you follow these carefully since you're avoiding W10:

1. **Check Compatibility**
- Confirm your Z270 motherboard supports USB 3.0 (most modern boards do).
- Verify that your BIOS/UEFI allows installing Windows 7 from USB without ODD.

2. **Prepare the Installation Media**
- Use a fresh W7 ISO file you downloaded.
- Extract the product key from your old BIOS (OEM Windows) if needed.

3. **Install via USB**
- Insert the USB drive into your PC.
- Boot from the USB and select the ISO during installation.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install Windows 7.

4. **Driver Installation**
- Since W7 doesn’t support USB 3 natively, you’ll need to:
- Download the latest USB 3 drivers for your specific board model.
- Install them manually via Device Manager or the manufacturer’s website.
- If unsure, consider using a third-party tool like Rufus or Windows Installer to pre-install drivers.

5. **Avoid W10**
- Use built-in tools (like Rufus) or third-party utilities that don’t require W10.
- Ensure your USB drive is formatted correctly (FAT32 or NTFS).

If you hit roadblocks, check the official Z270 motherboard documentation or forums for board-specific instructions. Good luck with your build!
