Hey everyone. I’m using Windows 10 for most of my daily work and gaming, but my audio tools prefer Windows 7. My system came with both OS installers, so I’m attempting a Windows 7 setup on one of my SSDs. Since my case lacks an optical drive, I used a well-reviewed LG portable DVD-RW drive that runs on USB. Customers on Amazon mentioned it works well for booting and reformatting. When I start from the W7 DVD inside this new drive, it skips the setup files and shows "Starting Windows," then stays frozen on the screen. Eventually, even the external optical drive stops reading the disc. The Windows 7 logo keeps animating without freezing completely. I’ve tried changing the boot mode in BIOS (MSI X99S) from UEFI to UEFI + Legacy but it didn’t help. Any suggestions?

Is your computer able to access and operate the USB port within Windows? (Processing a DVD or creating a burn) How long have you been waiting on the screen? It seems like either a faulty drive or a damaged disk.

Boot is starting in Legacy mode (EFI needs minor adjustments). The CSM module is currently active.

I waited thirty minutes. On my main system it works properly when started in Windows 10, but on my older 2009 Lenovo Windows 7 machine it boots into the Windows 7 disc just fine using the USB optical drive. Likely the issue lies with my motherboard’s handling of the USB drive for Windows 7. I remember it worked before installing the internal SATA DVD-RW.

I attempted connecting it straight to the rear USB ports on the back panel.
