I use it for MC, CSGO, FTP servers, virtual machines with virtual boxes and file sharing. You can handle all of that on Windows, but Windows Server offers better security, reliability, and stability. EDIT: also gain features such as NIC teaming and server management.

I'm new to servers and just want to know some simple things to try. Backing up your Windows PCs to the server sounds like a good start.

you’ll notice the win interface, similar to win 8, but cleaner. Begin by installing it, sharing folders and printers, and experimenting. You’ll see that in the server or online world, you’re not just making things for nothing—you’re building something useful. Don’t waste time or money on something you might not need later.

This site provides complete information on everything you need. It might seem that a Linux server would suit you better since Windows demands more resources.

Received the OS (authentic) for free from a friend. Aiming for a quad-core processor with 32GB of RAM. Should run smoothly. Only spent money on the motherboard; this was just a cool experiment.

I own a Dell Poweredge server running Windows Server 2008 R2, used for Minecraft, browsing sites, email, Emby, and as a live remote storage for my desktop. With a 1Gbps connection, it functions as a remote storage solution. On my desktop and laptop, I’ve configured it so all downloads, documents, and programs reside in a 12TB RAID array for my needs.

Well, you're running Windows Server as your operating system. It's typically used for server purposes, though it isn't strictly necessary. Feel free to use it however suits your needs. I downloaded the entire Dreamspark library using a Windows Server box.

You're lucky to have the official OS—it's costly, but worth it. Just mess around, set up software, and you'll discover useful things! Check out YouTube searches like "Homer server tour" or "home datacenter tour" for interesting content. After that, reinstall the clean OS and tweak it as you like. That's the plan I'd follow!
